The "carrus navalis" of Isis became "the ship of fools" of Sebastian Brandt, depicting sinful man as a fool who reaped death for his foolishness. "Carne vale!" (flesh good-bye!) became a part of the Roman-Catholic church year. Today, the "foolish" late winter days, dedicated to merrymaking and fun, which precede Lent, are now known as "Carnival."
